Kenya Holds Its First Ever Joint HIV-Infectious Disease Scientific Conference

National AIDS and STI Control Program jointly with the HIV Clinicians’ Society of Kenya (HIVCSOK), the Infectious Disease Society of Kenya (IDSK), and the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), convened  the first-ever joint conference on HIV and Infectious Diseases in Naivasha, Nakuru County between 23rd  and 26th October 2023.

The conference themed ‘’Excellence in Control of Infectious Disease and HIV Collaboration; Innovation, And Resilience in the Era of Global Health Threats’’ brought together  communities, professionals and experts both local and international in the field of HIV and infectious diseases. The conference aimed at fostering collaboration, sharing innovative approaches, and building resilience in tackling global health threats. Under the stewardship of Dr. Rose Wafula, NASCOP continues to embrace collaborations in science and technology to provide a platform to comprehensively address health concerns to improve patient care and outcomes, especially with representation of the community of Persons Living with HIV.

Some of the key thematic areas discussed in the scientific conference included the emerging danger of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and HIV acquired drug resistance (ADR), the role of newer technologies and treatment options, as well as the public health response to HIV and infectious diseases.

The scientific conference offered an opportunity for community participation and engagement by setting up the Community village. This safe space provided a diverse and vibrant approach and environment where community members talked about application of science into community action and interventions.

With the emergence of new and re-emerging infections, using science, sharing knowledge, and developing innovative strategies are vital for effective control and prevention of diseases.

The four (4) day successful event was co-chaired by Head of NASCOP, Dr. Rose Wafula and Head of the Infectious Disease Unit at Kenyatta National Hospital, Dr. Loice Achieng.
